Aquarius

Aquarius is often the one who asks the question nobody had thought to ask. The eleventh sign of the zodiac, turned towards the future and the collective, it makes the planets placed in it independent, inventive and attached to their ideals.

Air that holds its course

Aquarius is an air sign, like Gemini and Libra, and air stands for thought, exchange and perspective. More surprisingly for a sign reputed to be changeable, it is fixed, like Taurus, Leo and Scorpio: Aquarius holds on to its ideas, its principles and its way of seeing with a constancy that can be unbending. This is the air of the great currents, carrying a long-range vision rather than the opinions of the moment.

Its rulership is shared. In the classical scheme, Aquarius belongs to Saturn, whose domicile here takes a form turned towards collective structures and principles. Modern astrology adds Uranus, the planet of rupture, invention and freedom. The Sun is in detriment, since personal self-assertion gives way to the group and the shared ideal. Leo faces it across the zodiac, and the pair forms an axis linking heart and mind, self-expression and belonging to a larger whole.

A free mind

Aquarius thinks for itself. It questions habits, spots what could work differently, gets excited about new ideas and about causes that go beyond personal interest. Its gift is originality: it dares to be different, defends other people’s singularities and brings a fresh eye where everything seemed frozen. It is often a friend to humanity in the broadest sense, attached to equality, justice and the freedom of each person.

Independence has its shadow too. Aquarius can hold its emotions at a distance, rationalise what it feels and seem detached just when the other person is waiting for warmth. Its fixity sometimes makes it stubborn, convinced it is right against everyone, and its taste for difference can tip into provocation. It may find it easier to love humanity than the people closest to it. Linking its ideals to the intimacy of daily life remains its great lesson.

Aquarius, between friendship and freedom

Friendship is the favourite ground of Aquarius, and it colours all its bonds. Its circle is often varied, made up of very different people, and it stays loyal to them over the years, even at a distance. It thrives in collective projects and in settings where an idea can travel without going through a hierarchy. In love, it looks first for an accomplice, someone with whom to share ideas and values, and it needs each person to keep their own space.

Its respect for the other person’s freedom is rare, and it knows how to invent a bond unlike any other. It cannot bear to feel shut in; possessiveness or conventional expectations make it withdraw. Emotional intimacy, with the vulnerability it demands, asks more of it than ideas do. Its affection shows less in tender words than in a conversation picked up again, months later, exactly where it left off.
