Cancer
With Cancer, the fourth sign, the zodiac turns towards the intimate: what shelters, what ties a person to their own people, what is remembered. Sensitive and protective, the sign colours every planet placed in it with a need for emotional security.
Water that shelters
Cancer is a water sign, like Scorpio and Pisces. Water is the element of emotion, empathy and memory: it feels before it reasons, and keeps the imprint of whatever it has passed through. Its modality is cardinal, which often comes as a surprise, since Cancer tends to be imagined as passive. It is in fact a sign of initiative, but initiative turned towards care: founding a home, gathering people together, protecting them. The Sun enters it as summer begins in the northern hemisphere.
The Moon rules Cancer and is at home here, free to express needs, moods and attachment in full. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer: generosity takes the form of hospitality and protection. Saturn is in detriment, since coldness and distance sit badly with this sign, and Mars is in its fall, direct anger not being its way. Its opposite is Capricorn, and together they link home and the world, private and public life, the family a person comes from and the place they make for themselves.
Beneath the shell
Cancer feels everything, and quickly. It picks up the mood of a room on walking in, remembers a hurtful remark long afterwards, grows attached to places, objects and shared rituals. Its gift is attentiveness to others: it knows how to feed, console and welcome, and it creates around it a sense of home, whether in a family, a team or a circle of friends. Its memory is a wealth too, one that links the present to a story.
To protect itself, it wears a shell. It moves sideways, tests the ground, withdraws as soon as it feels threatened. The sign’s excess lies in this defence: touchiness, changeable moods, a tendency to brood, or a way of mothering that holds people back more than it lets them grow. Nostalgia can turn it towards the past at the expense of what is coming. Many of its sorrows stem from an unspoken need it had hoped someone would guess.
Cancer and those close to it
Cancer experiences its bonds as a family, even when they are not one. It remembers birthdays, checks in on people, keeps a place at the table for anyone who needs it, and with Cancer around, a work team soon becomes a small clan it watches over. In love, it looks for a refuge, an intimacy where it is safe to be vulnerable, and it gives without counting to whoever offers it that security.
What it hopes for are regular signs of affection and a certain constancy. Indifference hurts it more than an open quarrel, and it sometimes withdraws without explanation, hoping someone will come and find it. Its difficulty lies in telling care apart from control, and in leaving the other person free without feeling abandoned. Those who know it learn to read its retreats like a tide: it draws away, then returns, often with a gesture rather than with words.
