Sagittarius

With the ninth sign of the zodiac, the horizon widens. Enthusiastic, frank and hungry for discovery, Sagittarius pushes the planets placed in it to go further and to look for meaning in what they live through.

A fire on the move

Fire, the element of drive, confidence and inspiration, links Sagittarius to Aries and Leo. Its modality is mutable, as it is for Gemini, Virgo and Pisces: in the northern hemisphere it closes the autumn and prepares the winter, and its fire moves about, passes itself on, changes shape. It is neither the spark of Aries nor the hearth of Leo, but the flame carried from one place to another, from one idea to the next, to light a path.

Jupiter, its ruler, is at home in Sagittarius: expansion, generosity and the search for a broad vision unfold freely. Mercury is in detriment, since the sign prefers big ideas to details and conviction to nuance. On the far side of the zodiac lies Gemini, and their axis links question and answer, the near and the far, information and wisdom. Sagittarius gains by borrowing from its opposite a curiosity for detail, the kind that checks what it believes.

A traveller’s optimism

Sagittarius needs a horizon. It loves to learn, to travel, to meet other cultures, to talk philosophy late into the night. Its gift is confidence: it believes life has meaning and that tomorrow can be better, and this optimism is contagious. Frank, sometimes to the point of clumsiness, it says what it thinks with good humour. It often has a talent for teaching or storytelling, able to make others want to discover whatever fires its enthusiasm.

The same drive can overflow. Carried away by enthusiasm, Sagittarius may promise more than it will deliver, overlook details, underestimate obstacles. Its frankness sometimes wounds without it realising. Its love of freedom can become a way of escaping as soon as a situation feels restrictive, and its convictions can harden into sermons. It may also look far away for what is within reach. Its ideals carry their full weight when they become concrete commitments.

Sagittarius in company

Sagittarius readily combines friendship and adventure: it draws others into its plans and travels, and its circle opens easily to new people. In love, it looks for a travelling companion, someone with whom to share discoveries and laughter, who respects its need for space. The same need for a horizon follows it to work, where it enjoys missions that mean something, passing on knowledge, international settings and big projects, and runs out of breath under fussy supervision.

With Sagittarius, both people’s horizons widen, and the bond gains in lightness as well as generosity. Jealousy or confinement make it run; trust is what keeps it. Day-to-day commitment weighs on it more: the small attentions that keep a bond alive once the adventure dies down. Yet for Sagittarius, discovery can also happen close to home, beside someone it thought it already knew.
