Eclipses 2027

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes in front of the Sun, at a new Moon; a lunar eclipse, when the Moon moves through Earth’s shadow, at a full Moon. Both can only happen when the Moon is close to one of its nodes, the points where its orbit crosses the Sun’s apparent path.

In 2027, 2 solar eclipses and 3 lunar eclipses.

Types of eclipse

  • Total: the Moon covers the whole Sun, or the whole Moon passes into Earth’s shadow.
  • Annular: the Moon is too far from Earth to cover the Sun completely, leaving a ring of sunlight.
  • Penumbral: the Moon passes only through Earth’s outer shadow and dims slightly.

The time given is greatest eclipse, a single instant for the whole Earth; each eclipse is visible from only part of the globe.

Calculated with Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03, tropical zodiac, geocentric. Times to the minute, in Paris time and in Universal Time (UTC).
