Pisces
Pisces closes the circle of the zodiac. The twelfth and last sign, the sign of sensitivity and imagination, it makes the planets placed in it porous, intuitive and compassionate, and gives them a taste for union and for dreams.
Water without shores
With Cancer and Scorpio, Pisces makes up the water family, the element of emotion, empathy and intuition. It is mutable too, in the company of Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius, and closes both the northern hemisphere’s winter and the whole cycle of the zodiac, just before Aries opens it again. This is water in its most diffuse form, the ocean that knows no edges, where the boundaries between self and other blur.
Jupiter is its traditional ruler, at home here in a gentler guise of faith, kindness and forgiveness; modern astrology gives the sign a second ruler, Neptune, the planet of the ideal, of dissolution and of inspiration. Venus is exalted in Pisces: love becomes compassion. Mercury, for its part, is both in detriment and in its fall, since logical thought loses its way among images and intuitions. Virgo, its opposite, completes an axis that links sorting and welcoming, practical care and giving without counting.
A porous sensitivity
Pisces feels what others are going through, sometimes before they do. It senses atmospheres, unspoken sorrows, hidden longings, and responds with spontaneous compassion. Its gift is imagination: it dreams, creates, lets itself be carried by music, images and poetry, and can make tangible what words cannot say. Its gentleness disarms conflict, and its capacity for forgiveness is surprising. It often has a personal relationship with the spiritual, in one form or another.
This porousness is also its fragility. Without clear boundaries, Pisces can absorb other people’s emotions to the point of losing itself in them, sacrifice itself for others, escape into dreams when reality becomes too harsh. It sometimes finds it hard to say no, to decide, to hold a line. Idealisation exposes it to disappointment. Its sensitivity fares better when it has contours, and its dreams when they take concrete shape.
Pisces and the art of loving
Pisces listens without judging, and many of its friends come to it for comfort. In love, it seeks a deep union, close to a merging, in which two people recognise each other; it loves with tenderness and imagination, and can see the best in the other person, sometimes beyond what they show. At work, it feels in its place wherever creativity, care or listening count, and settings that are too rigid or too competitive wear it out.
Its presence brings gentleness and a poetic dimension to daily life that make it easier to inhabit. It needs tenderness, understanding and a reassuring framework that does not smother it. Its difficulty lies in idealisation: loving an image rather than the real person, or losing itself in the bond to the point of forgetting its own needs. A bond that leaves it a shore of its own, a time for solitude and dreaming, lets it love without dissolving.
