Venus in Pisces

Venus in Pisces loves with a rare porousness, able to feel what the other person is going through before they say it. This is where tradition places its exaltation: affection widens here into kindness towards everything that suffers.

A tenderness without shores

Whatever is fragile, poetic or unfinished touches this Venus more than anything. In Pisces, a mutable water sign ruled by Neptune in modern astrology and by Jupiter in tradition, the planet of affection finds its exaltation. A piece of music, a film, a tired face can overwhelm the person, and their imagination readily lends the other a depth that the other is sometimes unaware of.

Empathy comes almost effortlessly: this Venus puts itself in the other’s place, forgives easily, tries to ease pain. Its aesthetic taste leans towards the blurred and the dreamlike, towards atmospheres rather than clean lines. It values kindness, sensitivity and the spiritual dimension of a bond far more than outward signs of success.

In a relationship

Once it loves, Venus in Pisces gives itself completely. It senses needs, consoles, supports without counting the cost. Its affection is enveloping and full of delicacy, and the bond takes on an almost sacred dimension for it. In intimacy, it longs to merge, in a tenderness where the boundaries between self and other dissolve for a while. It knows how to love someone with their weaknesses, without demanding that they change.

In return, it needs its sensitivity to be received with care, neither ridiculed nor exploited. Harshness, cynicism or indifference wound it deeply. It also hopes for a certain romanticism, a bond that keeps some of its dream despite daily life. A gentle and reliable partner receives from it an uncommon patience, and a generosity that keeps no accounts.

Where it can rub

The line between loving and sacrificing oneself is thin for this Venus. It can forget itself in the other’s service, accept the unacceptable in the name of compassion, stay beside someone it wants to save rather than love. This boundless generosity exposes it to lopsided relationships, where it gives much and receives little, without daring to say so or even always noticing.

Idealisation is the other trap. It falls in love with an image as much as with a person, and reality, inevitably less perfect, can disappoint it cruelly. To avoid conflict, it sidesteps, falls silent, or escapes into dreams and imagined plans. The partner may then find it elusive, present and absent at once, without understanding what it really expects of them.

Nuances

Placed on an angle, above all the Ascendant, this Venus colours the whole way the person presents themselves: a soft gaze, a way of listening, a discreet but penetrating charm. Near the Descendant, it tends to play out in the choice of partners, with an urge to rescue or to idealise. Further from the angles, its sensitivity stays sharp but shows mostly in private, away from other people’s eyes.

Aspects from Saturn give this tenderness the limits it sometimes lacks, at the cost of some restraint. Those from Mars add assertiveness, useful for learning to say no. A link with Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces, heightens the ideal and the sensitivity still further. Exaltation describes a Venus that finds a generous expression here; the rest of the chart still has to give it an anchor.
